Artist Statement

Free Time is a larger-than-life sculptural installation of five black bears cast in bronze. The sculptures are painted green to call attention to an abundance of life and the potential for new growth.

The bears are unaware of the viewer, enabling a rare glimpse into the everyday life of majestic and mysterious animals that shouldn’t be so brazenly visible in a busy urban environment.

Two cubs wrestle and play with abandon. One cub explores the surroundings with childlike curiosity. The littlest cub stands close to her mother with a paw resting gently on her shoulder.

The mother bear is satisfied and blissfully content. A small smile curls softly on her snout.  She is there to protect her cubs if need be, ever-watchful and on guard, but right now, her children are at play. They are happy and eager for life, safe, and unaware of any dangers that might beset them.

The sculpture evokes the feeling of hope that arises upon awakening to a new day or a newly discovered reality, seen with the wisdom of experience. Perhaps this comes with greater clarity in knowing what truly matters - keeping loved ones safe, taking the time to find joy and happiness in life, and the simple satisfaction of having some free time.
